Crazy Summer Days: Niagara Falls Edition

Crazy Summer Days: Niagara Falls Edition

We took a short vacation to Niagara Falls, Canada this summer.  There were really only 2 weeks between school ending and Summer Dreamers starting (that’s the skills-retention camp that the public school has — my daughter doesn’t have problems retaining skills and she’s becoming increasingly bored with the program… a week into it!) so it felt really squeezed in!

Even though it was brief (we arrived after lunch on Monday and were home for dinner on Wednesday), it was action-packed.  So much so, in fact, that a few of us were cranky by the end of the vacation and we didn’t get to do everything on our wish list.  The good news is that we still have a wish list and everyone had such a great time that we want to go back.

On Monday we had a fun time on the Maid of the Mist.  We also walked SO MUCH!  We got back the hotel (which had a great view) and spent some time in the crappy hotel pool.  It was a hit with the kids :)

On Tuesday I woke up early and went for a run.  It was really fantastic.  I found my way to the top of the Horseshoe Falls — it was like running through a sprinkler!  We walked down with the kids and they were awed — hard not to be!

After that we went to MarineLand – I was skeptical but it was so fun.  We rode every ride we could and our daughter got to pet and feed belugas and was selected from the audience to pet and feed a dolphin.

We took a long drive (pretty and relaxing, but it felt long!) to the Niagara Whirlpool which wasn’t terribly whirly that day.   Then dinner and a sound sleep for everyone.

Wednesday we crossed back into the US, getting some extra love from the customs agents, and checked out the American Falls and Bridal Veil falls.  We went on the Cave of the Winds stairs and we were up-close-and-personal!  A little too close for me and the boys but my husband and daughter had a blast.

We were all really really tired and we had hoped to head up to Fort Niagara State Park but that’ll have to wait until the next trip!

We had a great time and built some wonderful memories.  I think this was our first family trip that didn’t involve other family or friends.  I think we’ll try for another trip later this summer, maybe camping somewhere close.  I would also love to take a day trip back to Niagara sometime in the next year or so!
